Defying the Hijab is the Symbol of Iran’s Freedom Movement

Each true revolution has its powerful symbols of freedom.

The symbol of the current protests in Iran is a woman who took off her hijab.

The woman has since reportedly been arrested, but she has quickly become one of the icons of the anti-government protests.

While Western leftists ally with Islamists and glamorizing hijab repression, in Islamic countries, removing the hijab is a form of freedom.

The debate over the hijab is a microcosm of the larger debate about Islam.

Western leftists backed Islamist political movements as agents of freedom, both originally in Iran and more recently in the Arab Spring, while betraying those who actually sought freedom.

The left’s alliance with fundamentalists who repress women in Islamic countries remains one of its greatest hypocrisies.
